Located in Green Park near Wellingnton Arch and Hyde Park in London, the Bomber Command Memorial was built to be modern but classic, Portland stone honors 55,573 young people from Great Britain, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Poland and other Commonwealth countries who died flying with the Bomber Command during World War II.
Inside the memorial, the space is opened into the sky with an opening designed to allow light to fall directly into the crew’s sculptures.
The scale of the sculpture as a whole means that visitors will always see the sculpture’s profile against the sky above them day and night – thus making that section of the sky powerfully symbolic for the memorial.
